World game hits the court

FUTSAL: The Football Stanthorpe season may have concluded, but the indoor game is set to take off with a new Futsal competition about to kick off.

After a brief absence from the town, Futsal is back, with two grades ready to hit the Fitness Centre court on Thursday, October 11.

"We've got a few teams already so we're on our way. Futsal hasn't been played at the centre for a few years I don't think so it'll be good and we're starting to get a fair interest in it,” Stanthorpe Fitness Centre acting co-ordinator Vance Sinden said.

"So we're going to run two competitions. We'll have the adults on Thursday from 6pm and a juniors competition on Friday from 4.30pm.

"The idea of that was to attract the kids along after school. So the seniors is 14 years or older and the juniors we're surmising sort of U11 to 14s.”

Both competitions are to be mixed, with at least one girl to be on the court at all times during the games.

"We're not going too bad for teams. We are hoping to get about six teams for each,” Sinden said.

"I think we worked out it'll run for the rest of the next school term.

"A lot of the soccer players are keen because it's off-season.”

The rules of Futsal are fairly straight forward, with five players on the court and a maximum of 10 players to a team.

"We're hoping it'll go well and if it does we'll see if we can run another competition over the Christmas holidays,” Sinden said.

"I figured we'd give it a shot.

"The idea is have something on at the centre Monday to Friday night.

"Netball is going really well. We're actually thinking of doing a volleyball competition in the future as well.”
