Women's sides play Alstonville

FOOTBALL: With the 2018 season almost upon us, a trial match against Alstonville FC at Ballandean was a great way to start the year.

On Saturday, March 17, Football Stanthorpe under 15 girls' representative team, along with the Ballandean ladies' team, will take on the same aged teams from Alstonville.

This will be a great showcase for females and football in our region.

The U15s will play Alstonville from 11am, under new appointed coach, Brett Morgan.

Brett is looking forward to the match and hopes this will be the first of many opportunities for these girls to play at a representative level.

The game will be followed by Ballandean ladies taking on Alstonville ladies from 1pm. Coach Neil Newman said this should be a great match-up for the Ballandean side ahead of the upcoming season.

Alstonville club spokesmen and coach Matt Wilshire said he looked forward to these matches.

He is an inspirational member of the Alstonville FC, especially when it comes to women's football and must be commended on the professional manner in which he conducts a successful tournament called the Oceania Cup every year.

This tournament takes place in Alstonville every October and is the only women-only tournament.

It attracts around 40 teams from NSW, including Sydney-based teams.

Details of this tournament can be found on the Oceania Cup website.

Both games are sure to be friendly and competitive and it would be wonderful to see as many locals there to support the teams and women's football in this area.
