Woman's WWII role unknown

WHILE the boys and men marched into the front lines in World War II, Australia women also served like never before.

One of these women was Private Jessie Florence Evelyn Roberts.

Keith Harrison, who came across Jessie's gravestone while contributing photos to the War Graves Photographic Project, said she was the only woman buried in the Warwick War Cemetery.

"She died, presumably in or near Warwick, of "illness" while serving in the Australian Women's Army Service during World War II," he said.

"She was from Bogantungan, near Rockhampton, where she enlisted."

He said exactly how Jessie died was still a mystery as details of her service had not been released.

"You need to prove family or legitimate research connection to access records of WWII personnel as a good number are still alive - and not many WWII records have been digitised yet," he said.

"On the other hand WWI records are relatively easily accessible."

Jessie's gravestone is just one of more than 1.7 million that can been seen on the War Graves Photographic Project website twgpp.org. The project allows family members who cannot visit war graves personally to view them with the click of a button.

With Anzac Day only weeks away, Jessie will be among those remembered for their service.
