Woman injured in head-on with truck at Torbanlea

POLICE are warning drivers to be alert to the fatal five ahead of the long weekend, after a woman suffered back injuries when her Suzuki Vitara car crashed into an on-coming truck yesterday.

The crash occurred at the Bruce Hwy Gympie St turn-off in Torbanlea just before 5pm, blocking the southbound lanes.

The Queensland Fire Service, Queensland Ambulance Service and police all attended the scene.

The crash blocked the Bruce Hwy southbound lanes for more than an hour as emergency services workers freed the woman and cleared the wreckage.

Hervey Bay police reported the woman received back injuries and was taken to Hervey Bay Base Hospital. The male driver of the truck received minor injuries, and emergency service workers spoke to him at the scene.

Sergeant Lance Millward urged drivers to remember the Fatal Five, which are: speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted or inattentive driving, and driving while tired.

"It's too early to say what has caused this crash, but investigations are ongoing," Sgt Millward said.

Police said they were led to believe the Suzuki driver had turned right into the on-coming truck.

The truck veered off the road and became wedged between some trees.
