Woman, 20, hit another woman in the head to protect her mum

A 20-YEAR-old woman who physically assaulted another woman at a Hervey Bay shopping centre has told a court she was protecting her mother.

Hervey Bay's Tahlia Amber Challis appeared in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court charged with common assault after the altercation at the Stockland Hervey Bay in Pialba on July 31.

The court heard Challis had encountered another woman who was known to her in the food court of on the day of the incident.

A fight ensued, which resulted in Challis hitting the victim in the head.

Police were called and Challis admitted to hitting the victim, which was later supported by evidence on CCTV footage.

Defence lawyer John Milburn told the court that Challis and the other woman had "prior differences" and that the victim had also made threatening remarks to Challis's mother before the incident.

Mr Milburn said his client had indicated that she did not want to try to contest the charge with an argument for self defence or provocation because she acknowledged that she had an opportunity to walk away before the assault happened.

Mr Milburn asked magistrate Stephen Guttridge to take into account the history between the two women and the "taunting" that took place before the alleged assault.

He also asked that a conviction not be recorded as Challis was in training to become a mortician and did not know if an assault conviction would impact on her chances of getting a licence to practise.

"It could have an adverse effect on that," Mr Milburn told the court.

Magistrate Guttridge elected to record a conviction.

He fined Challis $350.
