Indigenous leader makes most of job opportunities
OPPORTUNITY is a word that Craig Wone knows much about.
He went from leaving Year 10 without finishing school in his home town of Innisfail, to now leading a crew for production at Rio Tinto Alcan's Weipa site.
Mr Wone spoke to students about his experience and grabbing opportunities when they come up.
It was this attitude that earned Mr Wone a job at the Weipa mine, and seven months later a permanent position.
"I was then given the opportunity to be picked as one of six indigenous leaders," he said.
"I have 22 indigenous people on my crew including myself. It's significant. You won't see too many of those figures around."
Mr Wone speaks to young people in Aboriginal communities about getting jobs.
He now has two men he has trained into permanent positions.
