Westfund offers options as 300 BMA jobs go from Blackwater

CENTRAL Queensland residents who are currently insured with regionally-based health insurer Westfund Health are being offered a helping hand in the wake of the announcement that the BMA mine site in Blackwater will outsource over 300 positions.

Hundreds of employees of the BMA Blackwater mine will either be relocated to other sites or offered voluntary redundancies.

About 150 employees are still waiting for confirmation of their future with the mining company.

Westfund Health's regional manager Erica Fredericksen said the latest announcement by BMA will not only affect employees but the entire Blackwater community.

"There have been a lot of changes made to the mining industry over the past 12 months, which have had major impacts on local communities," she said.

"Blackwater residents will be feeling the effects of this mass job outsourcing for a long time so it is up to companies like Westfund to help during these difficult times

Westfund is reminding its members, who will be affected by the BMA Blackwater redundancies with hospital and extras cover, that they may be eligible for the Premium Pause Benefit, which pays a member's premiums for up to six months while they look for alternative work following involuntary redundancy.

"We are encouraging all members who have been impacted to contact us so we can talk about their options," Ms Fredericksen said.

"It is important that wherever possible our members can keep their families protected during these difficult times without having to eat into savings."

For more information on the Westfund Premium Pause benefit please contact Westfund on 1300 937 838.
