Challenge issued for coaches

IT looks like the Warwick Water Rats rugby union club is in for an improved season in 2011 following the appointment of Shane Hooper and Ryan Smith as joint coaches.

I remember driving to Toowoomba almost a decade ago to watch Hooper and Lekima Drole play for Queensland Country.

It is a while ago but I recall the strong running of Hooper from fullback and a field goal he kicked from about 45 metres, which he drop-kicked from a spot not far from the front of the grandstand at Gold Park.

Around the same time, Warwick made the grand final but went down to Goondiwindi in A grade.

Today, I issue a challenge to Hooper and last year’s coach Ryan Smith to perfect the “joint” coach arrangement.

I have seen joint coaches appointed to various sports and grades in the past and usually it ends up as one being the main coach and the other more behind the scenes.

At times, I have even heard of one having to be nominated to the parent body as the main coach so one name can go on the program each week.

So Hoops and Ryano, the challenge is out there to make the joint bit a success.

In a sport where the forwards and backs have such different roles it makes sense to have Hooper focusing on the backs and Smith on the forwards.
