Gas cylinder explodes on bridge
THERE is plenty of noise when a river rages but few expect to hear a gas cylinder explode.
That was the case at 7.30pm Tuesday when a cylinder exploded as it hit the rail in the middle of the McCahon Bridge just before the Condamine River peaked.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service lieutenant Chris Gilchrist said Southern Downs Regional Council workers and residents heard the noise and raised the alarm.
“It was in the middle of the bridge and there was a strong smell of gas for five minutes,” Mr Gilchrist said.
On Wednesday, Southern Downs Regional Council staff cleaned the bridge and found two gas cylinders and a refrigerator among the debris.
