Warning issued for feral pig hunters

THE Queensland Murray Darling Committee has issued a warning for feral pig hunters throughout Queensland.

QMDC regional co-ordinator for feral animals Darren Marshall said a huge number of wild pigs in Australia were believed to be infected with leptospirosis.

"The Queensland Murray Darling Committee is funding a research project into the feral pig with the hope of finding better ways to control numbers," he said.

"The research at four sites, in Queensland and in New South Wales, involved tracking 64 pigs for almost 12 months.

"Blood tests have uncovered that a quarter of all feral pigs are carrying leptospirosis and a smaller number are also infected with brucellosis

Mr Marshall said the disease was a risk to pigs hunters, their dogs and cattle.

"Obviously when people hunt pigs they are exposed to blood and all different parts of the animal and they can contract leptospirosis or brucellosis from those animals," he said.

Mr Marshall said early tests being run on trapped feral pigs was worrying and urged hunters to take care when handling the animals.

"There is some fascinating research being done into feral pig movement across the landscape and a lot of work being done with landholders to better control these pests," he said.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease of humans and animals caused by bacteria, which can be found in infected animal urine and animal tissues.

In humans, without treatment, leptospirosis can lead to kidney and liver damage and even death.
