WARNING: Hailstorms expected to hit Warwick and Stanthorpe

AN URGENT warning for residents to prepare for large hailstones and damaging winds has been issues as severe storms approach the Southern Downs.

"Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours," a Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson said. 

People in the area have been advised to move cars under cover, secure loose items and seek shelter.

The alert came at 2.40pm with storms expected to last the next several hours.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

* Move your car under cover or away from trees.

* Secure loose outdoor items.

* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.

* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.

* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
