Hospital wardsman accused of choking co-worker

A WARDSMAN accused of choking a female co-worker with a plastic bag continues to work at the Hervey Bay Hospital pending the outcome of court proceedings.

Michael Andrew Brown, 53, is charged with assault and Wide Bay Health would not comment on his employment status, but the Chronicle spoke with staff on Tuesday and was told he was still working at the facility.

Police documents allege a female staffer was walking towards the x-ray room on May 26 when she saw Brown standing near the waste linen area, holding a plastic bag.

Brown allegedly went "around the back of the victim...and wrapped the twisted plastic bag around the victim's neck".

When the woman tried to "grab hold" of Brown's right arm, he allegedly took her wrist and "twisted her arm up behind her back".

The woman told police she could "feel the bag around her neck become tighter" and she started to choke, yelling "you are hurting me" before Brown let go.

The pair had allegedly worked with each other for a year and Brown could "offer no reason" for the alleged altercation.

Brown was spoken to but allegedly refused to be interviewed.

He appeared in court briefly last month and the charge was re-listed for November 20. He has been given bail.

WBHHS executive director human resources Peter Heinz said he was "unable to make any comment on matters currently before the court".
