Ewingsdale to Tintenbar highway upgrade on time, on budget

THE Pacific Hwy Tintenbar to Ewingsdale upgrade is set to be completed on time and on budget, Acting Premier Andrew Stoner said at a site inspection yesterday.

The Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Services toured the site with Richmond MP Justine Elliot and Ballina MP Don Page.

All three politicians expressed their pleasure in the progress of the $862 million federal and state gov- ernment-funded 17km upgrade.

While the work hasn't had a "fair shake of the stick" with fine weather, Mr Stoner said, he gave an assurance the project was still expected to be finished late next year and would still come in on budget.

"Once complete, the upgrade will provide benefits including interchanges for motorists to safely enter and exit the highway and a continuous alternative local road link between Tintenbar and Ewingsdale for school buses and motorists who do not wish to use the upgraded highway," Mr Stoner said.

Ms Elliot and Mr Page praised the project as an example of what the state and federal governments can do when they work together.

"This will make a huge difference to the people of the North Coast (benefiting in terms of) driving time and safety, not just for locals but for people passing through," Ms Elliot said.

Mr Page said the upgrade had been good for the region in terms of economy and creation of jobs.

The project's general manager, Bob Higgins, backed that up, saying that in peak work times, the project employed between 600-700 people.

"This is what the local people want to see," Mr Page said.

The Tintenbar to Ewingsdale Pacific Hwy Upgrade has been funded by $566m from the Federal Government and $295m from the State Government.
