Underpass gains gong

THE St Mary’s underpass, constructed by FK Gardner and Sons, took out the Master Builders 2010 State Civil Contractor award on Friday night at a gala presentation held at the Sofitel Brisbane.

The Housing and Construction Awards play a pivotal role in promoting excellence in the building and construction industry in Queensland.

Master Builders executive director Graham Cuthbert said the awards gave the industry an opportunity to showcase and celebrate quality workmanship and innovation, as well as recognising the important contribution the building and construction industry made to the state’s economy.

“Winning a Master Builders Housing and Construction Award provides an excellent platform for public acclaim and is a great publicity tool that builders can use to set their business apart from the competition,” Mr Cuthbert said.

Master Builders regional manager Tony Ryder said the state civil contractor award recognised an iconic civil project.

“The St Mary’s underpass, a high-profile main arterial road forming part of the Cunningham Highway, demonstrates the transferability of FK Gardner and Sons’ skills,” he said.

“The underpass required staged construction with lanes closed periodically as the project progressed.

“With more than 10,000 vehicles a day passing overhead, safety practices were paramount.

“The resulting project is visually appealing, functional and of a very high standard.”

The Master Builders Housing and Construction Awards program recognises winners across each of the nine regions of Queensland, with the best of the best competing for the state titles in their categories.
