Twins make a splash

TWO sets of twins competed in the 12 years age group in the annual Killarney State School swimming carnival at the Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre yesterday.

It was a first for the Killarney carnival being held indoors at WIRAC.

Killarney PE teacher Lauren Quinlan said the move to WIRAC was because of the rain forecast this week.

"We had already postponed the carnival from last year due to wet weather and it was postponed again last week," Lauren said.

One of the four twins in the 12 years age group is in the running for an age championships but the age champions and house championship winner weren't announced at WIRAC yesterday.

All presentations will be at school parade this morning.

The swimming house championship trophy is currently held by Chauvel but the placings were well shared between Chauvel and Madsen houses yesterday and, even the swimmers, don't know which team is likely to receive the trophy today.

Lachlan Bartz won his races in 50m freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke yesterday and came second in butterfly behind Cody Byrne.

He might be a swimming winner but reckons his main sport is rugby league with the Eastern Suburbs juniors and last year with the Warwick under-43kg zone team.

His twin brother Jack came second in breaststroke and third in backstroke but said his interest was more in the performing arts than sport. He was one of the leads in the school musical last year.

Both are members of Killarney Swimming Club squad which meets each Wednesday night in summer. T

hey also have an occasional swim in Acacia Creek

For the Thornton twins, Connor was third in freestyle yesterday.

He lists athletics as his main sport but still rates the Killarney swim carnival as fun.

The twins play rugby league for Collegians and swim a little in the Condamine River.

"It is a bit colder in the Condamine than at WIRAC," Jack said.

"We like swimming in the Killarney pool."
