Truants get dobbed in to parents

MOBILE phones can do anything these days.

You can order your dinner, do your shopping and even find out when your child has been wagging school.

Warwick State High School is using text messages as a technologically forward way to stamp out truancy.

Parents may also receive communication via phone calls, school newsletters and the school website.

Regional director Russell Simpson said the initiative was achieving good results.

"The Warwick State High School ID Attend program includes a component for sending text messages to parents of students who are absent, alerting them to the absence," he said.

"It is a proactive approach to increasing attendance, and has produced some significant improvements."

Mr Simpson said truancy was treated as a very high priority at all Queensland schools, to ensure children attended.

"Improving student attendance is a multi-faceted issue that requires parents, schools, local communities and government services to work together to ensure students attend school all day, every school day," he said.

"Parents are, however, ultimately responsible for ensuring their children go to school.

"Principals, teachers and other school staff work together with the school community to help maximise student attendance."

Current records held by the department indicate that student attendance at Warwick State High has increased since 2009.

Mr Simpson said a number of other initiatives had been implemented to combat truancy.

They include breakfast programs, monitoring and reporting systems, linking families with support systems, flexible school arrangements and rewards.
