Toyota launches 2016 Prius from $34,990

Toyota has launched its 2016 Prius promising sporting prowess and a more rewarding driver experience from $34,990.

Featuring average fuel consumption of 3.4 litres for every 100km, the new model is $2500 more expensive than the vehicle it replaces, while a higher specification i-Tech is available from $42,990 (down $1000).

All components are new, which Toyota Australia product planner Michael Elias says ensures "you get more power from every drop of fuel".

Toyota says improvements throughout the car have ensured overall performance is maintained despite the lower combined output of 90kW (down from 100kW).

"This vehicle makes a statement…about what is possible in a hybrid car," Toyota's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said.

"Toyota has changed the entire focus and perspective of Prius by evoking a more emotional response with a car that is fun to see, touch and drive.

"New Prius is a mainstream car that advances its driving dynamics and driveway appeal while also delivering substantially improved innovation and efficiency."
