Touch lures more teams

INTEREST is booming in Warwick touch with more than 30 mixed teams nominated for the first season in 2012.

Warwick Touch Association president Jamie Cochrane said 26 mixed teams played in the second season in 2011.

"We have the same number of men's teams as last year," Cochrane said.

Late last year, the association top dressed its two fields at St Mark's Oval and Cochrane said games would not start until the fields were ready.

"We are hoping to play in a fortnight but will keep players posted with updates," he said.

"The fields are already a huge improvement on last year and the grounds will be softer and more even."

Men's fixtures will be played Monday nights on the touch fields, with mixed fixtures Wednesday nights on touch fields and some footy fields.

Some Warwick players are heading to Rockhampton at the end of March for the state championships which also doubles as selection trials for Queensland touch teams to play in the State of Origin series at Coffs Harbour in July.

National teams will then be selected for the international series against New Zealand in Australia late in 2012.

Nominations are still being taken for teams and individual players with Cochrane on 0410 380909.
