Top talent at star awards

AN equestrian rider who competed in national and international events before moving to a successful career in sports administration will return to Warwick as guest speaker at the Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Senior Sports Star of the Year awards dinner on March 19 at the Warwick RSL Club.

Katie Bickford (nee Parker) was a journalist at the Daily News before embarking on a career in executive management two decades ago.

She is best known in the sporting world for her appointment last year to the board of the Brisbane Broncos Rugby League Club, one of the powerhouses on and off the field in the National Rugby League.

Bickford's appointment made her the first women to be on the Broncos board.

She was a director of the Australian Baseball Federation board for seven years, where she was responsible for strategic planning, marketing, sponsorship, membership and key relationships.

Currently, she is adviser to the Bandits baseball team which plays in the National Baseball League.

During her time in Warwick, she was an accredited equestrian coach, judge and competitor at national and international level and now has a family involvement with the sport.

Away from sport, her career in executive management includes advising on strategy and business development, stakeholder and business engagement, risk and reputation management, strategic positioning, brand marketing and change management. She has also held senior advisory roles with government.

Her business focus in recent times has been with global property company Lend Lease and the redevelopment of the RNA (Exhibition) grounds in Brisbane.

The March 19 awards night is an opportunity to pay tribute to 11 monthly senior sports stars from 12 sports.

Last Monday, 11 junior sports stars were honoured from 13 sports.

The only sport represented twice among the 22 winners is athletics which means a wide variety of sports are played successfully in the award areas, Warwick, Killarney, Allora, Clifton, Inglewood and Texas.
