Top lots revealed at Magic Millions Yearling Sale

HORSE RACING: More than $150 million in cash will be splashed over the six sessions at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in the next week in a bid to chase a dream.

That dream is best embodied by Peter Tighe and his fellow owners who at the 2013 Magic Millions sale decided to part with $230,000 for a Street Cry filly, who until then was only known as Lot 329.

It's a number that Tighe and co will never forget. For that $230,000 they got Winx, Australia's champion racehorse who has re-written all kinds of history, including three straight Cox Plate wins.

It's unlikely there is another Winx among the sale catalogue this time but there are plenty of owners willing to part with big money to secure a potential future champion.

There are 60 yearlings that are either out of or siblings to Group One winners, while 23 of the 104 sires represented are putting forward their first crop.

The phenomenal success of Spirit of Boom's first two-year-old crop so far this season has whet the appetite of buyers willing to take a chance on an as yet unproven sire.

Last year, the average price for the main sale topped $200,000 for the first time and the projections are even higher this time around.

We've picked out five well-bred lots worth keeping an eye on at the sales.

Lot 635 - Bay Colt - Time for War - Courgette

She Will Reign was a $20,000 purchase who went on to win a Golden Slipper and now her half brother goes on sale on Friday. This colt is by the late Time of War, a handy two-year-old in his own right, and promises to attract plenty of interest. She Will Reigna's half sister by Shamus Award went for $425,000 at last year's Inglis Sales.

Lot 767 - Chestnut Colt - Snitzel - Gold Anthem

There are no less than 47 Snitzels on offer across the sale, but none so well related as Lot 767, who is a half brother to brilliant sprinter Starspangledbanner, who was a Group 1 winner in both UK and Australia and has been a well-performed sire.

Worth noting before you start signing blank cheques, that things can get a little crazy when it comes to siblings of stars. Coolmore and China Horse Club forked out $2.4 million for another half brother, Wilderness at the 2013 Magic Millions Sales. He had eight starts for just one win at the Geelong Synthetic.

Lot 435 - Chestnut Colt - I am Invincible - Watchful

As a half brother to champion two-year-old Sepoy, this colt will attract plenty of international attention. Sepoy's own stud career is yet to flourish, with just the one G1 winner but his brother will attract plenty of attention with I Am Invincible's yearlings averaging over $300,000 at last year's sales.

Lot 733 - Chestnut Filly - Snitzel - Flidais

Sweet Idea was every bit the poster girl for the Magic Millions, brought for $240,000 just hours after her owners lost the 2YO Classic on protest with No Looking Back, she returned 12 months later to finish second in the same race. As a three-year-old she would win the Magic Millions Guineas before being sold again, this time for $1.6 million at a Magic Millions Broodmare sale.

This week her little sister goes on sale and is expected to attract a huge amount of interest.

Lot 292 - Bay Colt - Sea The Stars - Shamal Wind

Shamal Wind was a very talented sprinting mare who won the Oakleigh Plate and her first foal hits the ring on Thursday by English Derby and Arc winner Sea the Stars. We haven't seen many Sea The Stars in Australia, and this colt is the only one at the sale.
