Top dog is best man

TAKING the 'man's best friend' adage to new heights, Kevin Ginger and Ruth Harley made sure their dog Cougar felt included when they were married at the weekend - by appointing him the best 'man'.

Cougar - a bobtail rottweiler cross - looked on proudly as the couple exchanged their vows on Saturday afternoon in front of 50 friends and family.

The 16-month-old dog looked the part too, dressed in a gold embroidered vest with matching purple tie, and he was perfectly behaved during the ceremony.

The happy couple said it had never occurred to them not to include their beloved pooch.

"He's our baby - he's part of the family," the-now Mrs Ginger said.

"He thinks he's a human, and he just about is. He has lots of human traits. He eats human food.

"When we have a cup of tea in the morning - especially if it's in winter time, he'll have a cup of tea with us."

After their photos, Mr Ginger loosened his tie and turned to his best man to ask him whether he'd like a beer.

Refusing politely, Cougar instead chose to mingle with the other guests - and dogs - once his official duties were over.

Watching Cougar wander off, Mr Ginger tried to explain how much the dog meant to him.

"He's just the best," he said.

"He's obedient to me and he's a great guard dog."

Each night, Mrs Ginger added, Cougar would often wander the house and visit each of the rooms to make sure all the grandchildren were all right.

But the wedding day wasn't just about their four-legged friend.

In the ceremony, Mrs Ginger had also wanted to include her parents, who had both passed away, her mother just three months ago.

That was the reason behind the bride's choice of a purple dress and theme - it was her mum's favourite colour.

"I'm also wearing her necklace. It was the last one she got before she died," Mrs Ginger said.

"Our rings were my mum and dad's too. Mum left them on the drawers before she left for hospital. She can't be here, but having those rings makes sure she is here."

The couple is honeymooning at Queen Mary Falls and plans to eventually settle in Killarney.
