UPDATE: The temperature has remained cool in Toowoomba and currently feels like 8.3 degrees.

At 9.30am with the sun up the apparent temperature was still 0.8 degrees.

A high pressure system in the Great Australian Bight 2000km away is the cause of the frigid temperatures.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Adam Blazak said the city reached a minimum of two degrees today.

"Which is eight degrees below average, you would have to go back to 2004 to find another May day that cold," he said.

Mr Blazak said the last time mid-May temperatures were this cold was in 1978.

EARLIER: THIS morning was the coldest day yet this year in Toowoomba.

The city's residents woke up to freezing temperatures this morning with the mercury dropping to just 3 degrees and the apparent temperature at -2.5 degrees.

It is expected to hit a maximum of 18 degrees today.

Warwick's mercury fell below almost to freezing point, hitting 0.8 degrees just after 5.30am.

Heading west, Roma was down to 1.6 degrees and St George down to 3 degrees just before 6am.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting the weather to warm up again tomorrow and for the rest of the week, with minimums of about 10 degrees.

Rain is expected on Wednesday and Thursday next week.
