RECENT data shows Toowoomba comes second in a list of Australia's most well-read cities, ranked only after Canberra.

The data, collected by Bookworld and Angus and Robertson, shows local residents are buying and reading an increasing number of eBooks rather than physical books.

Toowoomba librarian Liz Derouet said the library would welcome eBooks in the near future.

"There's an added dimension," she said.

"EBooks mean people who couldn't previously come to the library because of other commitments can still borrow books."

Toowoomba resident Trevor Payne and his wife Lorraine go to the library up to three times a week and prefer physical books.

"We're always learning from books," Mrs Payne said.

"We only deal with the truth."

Bookworld chief executive officer James Webber said more than 60% of all books sold in Toowoomba were downloaded in an e-version.

"The convenience of being able to download a book directly from our site straight to your eReader or tablet is obviously a big bonus," he said.
