Thief steals tools to 'teach owner a lesson'

GARRY Robert Barret Steinohrt told police he stole about $15,500 of tools to teach the owner a lesson, Dalby Magistrates Court has heard.

On July 4, a local man parked his work vehicle on Myall St while having dinner.

When he returned, two unlocked boxes containing the tools of his trade had been emptied and the equipment inside taken.

The value of all the tools stolen was about $15,500.

CCTV footage at The Cri identified Steinohrt, 25, removing the items from the vehicle.

Police executed a search warrant on July 12 and located the tools in a shearing shed on his property.

When showed the footage, Steinohrt admitted to the crime and told officers he stole the items to teach the tradesman a lesson about locking his boxes.

On July 10, he was randomly intercepted on Surat Developmental Rd driving with an unsecured and loaded handgun.

He also returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.067.

Steinohrt was the holder of a weapons licence.

He pleaded guilty to stealing property exceeding $5000, drink-driving, carrying a loaded weapon while in a public place, possessing a weapon while intoxicated and failing to secure a weapon while in a vehicle, when he appeared in court on Tuesday.

Magistrate Kay Ryan did not record a conviction and sentenced Steinohrt to 40 hours of community service for the theft.

For the drink-driving and weapons offences, Steinohrt was fined $800.

He was also disqualified from holding a driver's licence for one

 

month.
