'Thunderstorm asthma' kills two as Melbourne choked

A THUNDERSTORM which raged through Melbourne has killed at least two after it triggered hundreds of asthma attacks throughout the city.

Each of those, including Hope Carnevali, 20, died while waiting for ambulances.

Emergency crews took calls every four to five seconds.

News Corp reported that Melbourne hospitals experienced their biggest night ever, as people suddenly struggled to breathe.

The weather event delivered the devastating conditions for "thunderstorm asthma" from 7pm on Tuesday.

It is created by a combination of a high pollen count in the air, strong northerly winds and humid conditions.

Ms Carnevali was named by Nine News, which reported the 20-year-old died on the front lawn of her home.

Her uncle told Nine News she was a "beautiful, gorgeous little girl".

"She'd do anything for anyone," he said.

"If somebody needed her she'd be there. She was an angel. We're going to miss her so much."

It was a "state disaster" according to health commander Paul Holman.

"Within an hour (of the storm) we'd received 160 calls, and had run out of resources," he said.
