Council prepares plan in case of an emergency at Dam 7

THERE'S no need to panic, but Mount Morgan residents should be prepared in case of an emergency at the No 7 Dam.

Fitzroy River Water, which is responsible for the safe operation of the No 7 Dam, recently contacted Mount Morgan properties identified as potentially being at-risk in the unlikely event of an emergency at the dam.

Rockhampton Local Disaster Management Committee chair and Deputy Mayor Tony Williams said FRW had an emergency action plan to manage the safety of the dam, and Mount Morgan residents were being made aware of this.

He said the notification process was something they were required to do.

"We don't want to scare the community, we are just making sure all the procedures are in place should the worst case scenario happen," Cr Williams said.

That worst case scenario would be if the dam wall failed.

"If the wall failed, there are some properties in the vicinity as you head towards the Dee River that would be at risk," he said.

An assessment has been done on the integrity of the dam wall and Cr Williams said it was perfectly fine.

The dam is inspected annually and the most recent inspection was in September by an external engineering consultancy firm.

FRW posted the No 7 Dam emergency plan online, as well as a map showing areas likely to be affected.

"There was also a direct mail out to affected properties with the flyer and map, and we put a public notice in The Morning Bulletin and The Argus, as well as posting on the council and FRW websites and putting up posters," the councillor said.

Residents who have been contacted by FRW should ensure they update their details on the notification list as requested.

Those residents wishing to update their details electronically can fill out the form at
