The tale of ‘Red Apples and Green Gremlins’ comes to fruition
RUGBY LEAGUE: A penned history of Stanthorpe Rugby League is now available with the release of Red Apples and Green Gremlins.
The book, researched and authored by David Ball, celebrates footy in the area to mark the 100 year anniversary in 2019.
Ball spent several months compiling the finished product, which takes a serious and sometimes comical tone throughout its 25 pages.
“The journey covers ten decades and takes you through many important events, stories and changes that have occurred along the way,” Ball writes in his preface.
“Most of the information was generated from endless hours perusing old newspapers and online sites, others have come about with the memories of past players and there are a couple of my own personal experiences during my playing days.
“My fascination with history combined with a love for the game of rugby league itself, was all the inspiration I needed to compile this book.
“I hope it brings as much enjoyment to the reader that it did to me when writing it,” he said.
From Stanthorpe’s first ever game against Toowoomba Valleys on Saturday, July 19, 1919 in front of crowd in excess of 2000 up until Stanthorpe’s ladies league tag side claiming a premiership in 2019, the book covers all corners of Stanthorpe’s illustrious history with the game.
To pick up your copy of the book head to the Gremlins clubhouse this afternoon (Thursday) from 4.30-5.30pm or contact the club via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Stanthorpe-Gremlins-RLFC
