'Switch to NBN or face black out': Chamber

THE pressure is on businesses in the Toowoomba CBD to make the change to the NBN and avoid being "blacked out", the city's Chamber of Commerce and Industry has warned.

The CBD's copper telecommunications network will switch off on August 28 and businesses that have not switched to the National Broadband Network will be without both internet and telephone services.

Chamber president Andrew Wielandt said the responsibility was now on CBD businesses to contact their service provider and ensure they were not impacted by the copper turn off.

"It is the responsibility of businesses to make sure they are connected to the NBN before August 28," Mr Wielandt said.

"Our concerns remain that the copper turn off will have impact local business. However, NBN Co are working with us to help make the switch over as smooth as possible.

"There is still plenty of uncertainty and we would like answers."

NBN Co spokesman Ryan Williams echoed Mr Wielandt's words encouraging businesses to make the change.

"The move to the NBN is not automatic.

"Residents and businesses who want to keep using their existing landline phone and internet services must place an order for services over the NBN with their preferred phone company or internet service provider as soon as possible.

"As long as an order has been received before August 28 their services should not be disrupted."
