The group where you can score freebies in Stanthorpe

A GROUP of locals are proving one man's trash can almost always be another man's treasure.

The group is called The Unconsumers and it's a place where residents can share their giveaways and request items they're looking for with one stipulation - everything much be free.

The creator of the group, Kathryn Haylock, said she was inspired by a group of the same name from Toowoomba.

"There was nothing like it (in Stanthorpe) so I messaged the admin of the Toowoomba group and it turned out that there are now quite a few around the Darling Downs, so we started a Stanthorpe group,” she said.

The main purpose of the group is to help keep things out of landfill.

"What you might see as trash, someone else might have a use for,” Mrs Haylock said.

"I've personally collected jars for my pantry, unwanted textiles and my favourite was a heap - about 50 I think - of those little plastic bags that shirts or baby clothes come in with the little hanger attached. I used these as storage for games in my classroom.

"Another time I saw a lady collect broken crockery, something that would almost always end up in the trash, and make beautiful garden stepping stones out of it.”

People swap all sorts of things in the group, from plants and pots to produce or old bits of wire and tin.

"I'm lucky that it's a really easy group to manage. Everyone who joins has some desire to keep things out of landfill, so the group doesn't really have any issues or drama,” MrsHaylock said.

"We would love to see the group grow. The more people keeping things out of landfill the better.”
