Teen tops cattle class
AT just 15 years of age Ben McMahon was ecstatic to win his first prime cattle event at the Killarney Show yesterday.
The Year 10 student’s 15–month-old Limousin-cross weighed in at an impressive 580 kilograms and was named champion of the event.
“I have been working with cattle pretty much all my life; my family has always been involved in it,” he said.
Ben’s family bought back the prized steer at the cattle sales following the judging and Ben plans to show the beast at other shows in the future.
Today he hopes to gain another champion title when he competes in the stud cattle event.
Show secretary Jamie Mackenzie said cattle entries were the highest they had been in a long time, thanks to the recent wet weather.
