THE new football season is fast-approaching with teams starting pre-season and training.

One side kicked off its campaign with a trip northwest on the weekend, as the Stanthorpe United men's side ventured to Chinchilla to take on the Bears.

Players faced scorching temperatures with the Saturday friendly being played in 40-plus degree weather.

United overcame its opposition, with a more comfortable afternoon than the 4-2 scoreline might suggest.

"It was a great way to get our season under way, and despite the heat, the boys performed fairly well for the opening hit out of the year,” coach Steve McEvoy said.

"We were never really worried about the result.

"We'll take a win but the trip was more about getting the team together and having a bit of fun.”

The 2018 Football Stanthorpe season is set to start on April 21.
