Task force set to visit dam site

THE controversial Emu Swamp Dam site is on the itinerary for a visit from a task force set up to identify potential future dams across the state.

Councillor Vic Pennisi said the Coalition's Dams and Water Management Task Group - set up by Tony Abbott and deputy chaired by Barnaby Joyce - had been travelling around Queensland to check out proposed infrastructure.

"They are going to come and have a look at the (proposed Emu Swamp Dam) site at some stage," he said.

Cr Pennisi said he couldn't expand on exactly when the members of the taskforce would hit the Granite Belt.

He said if the dam proposal got support from the group it could "potentially elevate it up the ladder".

While the dam would ensure water security for the southern end of the region, if the council had to contribute to the project - which would cost $80 million - Warwick ratepayers could also be slugged.

Federal LNP Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott submitted the proposal for a new Granite Belt dam to the task force and said it was being reviewed for inclusion on a list of potential new dam sites to take to the next Federal Election.

"The process is competitive with only the submissions with the best value on investment being successful and the initial task group response has been favourable."

But Mr Scott said the project had "a long way to go" including further consultation with affected landholders and the process of environmental impact assessment

Last year council gave the go ahead for an $800,000 supplementary environment impact study despite investigations by the Warwick Daily News uncovering confidential documents in which consultants Unidel advised "the Emu Swamp Dam in its current configuration is unlikely to receive approval for environmental reasons".
