Takata airbag recall: Which models are affected

MORE than 500,000 cars in Australia have already been caught up in a massive worldwide safety recall following the discovery of faulty air bags.

But that number could climb to much higher.

The Australian government's information website recalls.gov.au crashed it in the early hours of Thursday morning. The website was still down at 11.30am but appeared to be coming back up again about 15 minutes later.

The number of cars affected by Japanese company Takata, which manufactures 20 per cent of the car industry's airbags, is climbed to more than 50 million worldwide.

Car brands that are affected include Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors.

EXPLAINER: What is Takata, and what is wrong with my airbag?

News.com.au reported that so far, at least 556,000 cars have been recalled in Australia to have their Takata airbags replaced.
