Taipans not about to tamper with winning formula

THE Cairns Taipans have certainly put a lie to the old saying that familiarity breeds contempt.

On the way to claiming the club's first NBL minor premiership this season, coach Aaron Fearne used the same starting five in every game - the first time that has happened in the competition.

One of the key men in that quintet has been American guard Scottie Wilbekin (pictured), playing in his first season as a professional.

The 21-year-old started his stint Down Under by winning the player of the week in round one, and ended the regular season by claiming the same award last weekend after a game-high 25 points against the New Zealand Breakers in Auckland to give the Taipans top spot and home-court advantage in the finals.

Cairns will begin its best-of-three semi-final series against defending champion Perth in north Queensland tonight.
