Swamp dam site still up in air

EMU Swamp Dam continues to be a hot topic, despite Southern Downs Regional Council's perceived reluctance to look at the dam site option.

LNP leader Tim Nicholls dropped into the region last week and high on his agenda was a trip out to the proposed dam site.

He said during his two-day stay in the region, water was a big talking point.

"Without a shadow of a doubt the importance of water to the production of the region. The LNP's plans are to build the roads, the dams and the bridges we need - particularly dams,” Mr Nicholls said.

"We know of the transformative power water has in regional communities.

"One of the areas that has been raised with me is Emu Swamp and the dam site that's out there. Obviously the opportunity to investigate the potential around Emu Swamp as a dam site and the willingness of the local community to want to contribute and be part of the solution, not just to make a problem, has been important.”

Chair of the Stanthorpe Community Water Reference Panel Stephen Tancred said he enjoyed positive discussions with Mr Nicholls.

"He indicated that they haven't got a lot of money if they form government to splash around,” Mr Tancred said.

"What he did say is that if they form government that his departments would assist in anyway they could, they'd minimise red tape and assist with the processes.”
