Super support for cricket in fun day

CRICKET: The uniforms were swapped for colourful outfits - and even a banana costume - for Stanthorpe Cricket's Super-8s Day.

The fun day of cricket is the major annual fundraiser for Stanthorpe Cricket, held at the McGlew St Sporting Complex on Saturday.

Stanthorpe Cricket president Luke Brady said while the funds raised were still being finalised, he believed it was their most successful Super-8s Day yet, based on the number of teams involved.

"It was a good day,” Brady said.

"We ended up with 18 teams which was more than we expected, but we were happy to accommodate for everyone who wanted to play.”

Brady welcomed the community's support for the club, which largely came from those who weren't regulars at weekend games.

"It was good to see the people come to support us,” Brady said.

"It's good they can have a fun day and still support us.”

While the exact figure was yet to be determined, he anticipated the day would be a significant financial boost for the club.

"Due to the numbers I would say it was probably our most successful one yet,” he said.

He said they always enjoyed putting on a cricket-related day that got the community together and helped to bolster Stanthorpe Cricket's facilities.

"It's a good way for us to raise some money and still have something fun and something that's involved with cricket,” he said.

Teams rotated in four groups throughout the day.

The fundraiser is a crucial annual event for the club, helping them to replace much-needed equipment, but Brady said this wasn't the only benefit of the day, which also showcased the great sport.

He said the Super-8s Day was also a good opportunity for non-cricketers to try their hand at the game and see if it's something they might be keen to join in on next season.

Brady said Stanthorpe Cricket would hold Twenty20 games this Saturday at CF White and Sheahan Ovals from 12.30pm.

RSL will play Souths, while Wanderers will go up against Tenterfield.
