SEVERE thunderstorms have caused widespread damaged across the Southern Downs ripping roofs from buildings and sparking localised flash flooding.

Wind gusts of up to 90kmh ripped trees out by the roots while hail hammered homes and cars.

There were some reports of localised flashed flooding.

The Stanthorpe High Street Motor Inn's roof was completely ripped off by the strong winds.

State Emergency Service members from Stanthorpe and Warwick worked through the night to tarp the roof.

As crews secured the roof, others helped light the scene and clean up debris.
