Stanthorpe Library could be on the move

THE cat is seemingly out of the bag with what the future could hold for the Stanthorpe Library.

Over the weekend architecture firm Complete Urban posted to Facebook and Instagram that they've been "engaged by Southern Downs Regional Council to undertake a feasibility study into the relocation of the current Stanthorpe Library into the Stanthorpe Civic Centre”.

"The current Stanthorpe Library occupies 421sq m in a purpose-built facility in Weeroona Park approximately 100m to the west of the Civic Centre.

"The building is shared with the Stanthorpe Art Gallery who are looking to expand their floor area into the space currently occupied by the library,” the company's post said.

"Complete (Urban) have identified 3 potential locations in the current Civic Centre that may be suitable to house the relocated library.

"The aim of the feasibility study is to assess the condition of the existing building, and to make comment on the suitability of the building to accommodate a library.”

While the move is not set in stone, people have taken to social media to vent their disappointment about the lack of community consultation regarding the move.

A council spokesperson told the Border Post yesterday that consultation would occur once the feasibility study was completed.

Back on September 29, 2017, SDRC Cr Rod Kelly spoke to the Border Post on this exact issue.

Cr Kelly said consultation would be paramount when the time came to discuss the facility's shift.

"It's not just a matter of picking up the library and shifting it, because people have been going to that place for a long time,” Cr Kelly said.

"If we were to move the library, and that's still in the discussion stage, we want to make sure we follow a process and just don't go and move it and say 'people, here's your new library'.

"That's not the way we want to do business.

"If we do move it you've got to be conscious of access for everybody.

"There needs to be a feasibility study done on the relocation of the library, if that was to happen, and make sure that we have adequate communication and discussion with the users of the library,” Cr Kelly said.

"For me, if you relocate something you need to make sure that it is as good as or better than what you've got when you started,” he said back in September.
