Stanthorpe to host Intrust Super Cup match

AFTER two years of planning between Stanthorpe rugby league officials and the Queensland rugby league, it has been announced that Stanthorpe will host an Intrust Super Cup rugby league match later this year.

The Sunshine Coast Falcons will play the Burleigh Bears in a live televised game at Sullivan Oval on August 16, with the Stanthorpe Gremlins and Gremlinettes playing matches in the warm-up to the main game.

The game will be televised live on the Nine and Win Networks with a potential television audience of 140,000 people.

Crowd numbers are expected to be between two and a half and three thousand people.

Stanthorpe Gremlins board member Col Britton made the announcement at the chamber of commerce meeting this morning.

"The rugby league community in Stanthorpe is really excited about what's happening," he said.

"The benefits to the community will be of a substantial nature.

"From a rugby league perspective, we want these games here to raise the profile and participation level of the game."

Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce President John Bylicki said the event would be a massive boost for the town.

"It will bring incredible economic benefits to us, both businesses and retailers," he said.

Southern Downs Regional Councillor Vic Pennisi congratulated the Stanthorpe Rugby League for bringing such an event to the region.

"Rural Australia is a breeding ground for future players and many players from this region have gone on to represent Australia in their respective sports," he said.

"It's important to bring these events to the region to promote sport in rural and regional Queensland, but you must have the correct facilities to host these events.

"I'd like to congratulate the Stanthorpe Rugby League for the hard work they have done to secure this event."

With less than three months to the event, the match organising committee are calling on sponsors and volunteers to get involved and have invited anyone who is interested to attend committee meetings.

"These meetings will be held at 5:15pm every Friday afternoon at the Gremlins' clubhouse at Sullivan Oval," Britton said.
