St Mary's classrooms occupied by stranded Yeppoon students

THE St Mary's community has been pleasantly surprised to see some of their classrooms occupied by St Brendan's College students from Yeppoon.

The 60 staff and students from St Brendan's endured the category five cyclone Marcia early on Friday morning and due to their school grounds being declared unsafe, began a journey to Nudgee College in Brisbane to board and go to classes for at least a week.

The trip came to grinding stop on Sunday morning with the Bruce Hwy at Gympie cut by floodwaters and they decided to have breakfast at Maryborough McDonald's.

St Mary's deputy principal Dan Lourigan connected with St Brendan's staff and offered assistance.

He said the students had been staying in classrooms with the St Mary's families and staff quickly supplying bedding.

Principal Graham Meertens said he was proud to see the school community rally around the Yeppoon visitors.

"Many of our students and staff were happy to support the St Brendan's boys with loaning mattresses," he said.

"It was a great opportunity to assist people that have experienced such devastation over recent days."

The St Brendan's students were expected to leave on Monday morning once flooding had subsided.
