Local legend dies: Spirit House founder's legacy to live on

A SPIRITED business woman, devoted wife, loving mother and an inspiring friend and mentor; Helen Brierty will be remembered by many on the Coast.

Mrs Brierty was credited with putting Yandina on the map, having created the ultimate dining experience with her husband Peter at their iconic Spirit House restaurant.

Sadly, after a short battle, Mrs Brierty died suddenly from cancer.

Spirit House manager and close friend Jess Da Costa said she had left a big hole in the lives of the people she had mentored and inspired.

"It happened quite fast but I don't think Helen would have wanted it any other way as she was not one to lie around and feel sorry for herself," she said.

"We know she wouldn't want us to sit around mourning and we hope to keep her legacy going on in to the future."

Mrs Brierty and husband moved to the Coast from Melbourne in 1976 and had called it home ever since.

In 1995 they purchased five acres of land in Yandina and put aside plans of retirement to commit the next two decades of their lives in to transforming it in to the lush Thai-inspired oasis it is today.

Mrs Brierty was well-known for her energy and dedication and was proof that age was no barrier when it came to running a successful business.

Right up until her passing she never swayed from her positive outlook on life.

Ms Da Costa said she met with Mrs Brierty a week before she died and remembered having a good laugh and recalling fond memories.

"She worked so hard to get the restaurant to where it is and she told me she had no regrets and that she had lived a good life," she said.

"She taught me the ins and out of business and how to be a better manager and a better person in general. I am very fortunate to have worked with her and I just hope I can continue on what she started."

Ms Da Costa said the Brierty's sons will now step in to become an integral part of the business and she knew Mrs Brierty was excited to see a new generation get behind the restaurant.

"Spirit House will go on strong and we have no intention of changing it," she said.

"Helen cared about all of her staff dearly and she was an inspiration to them all."

As per her wishes, Mrs Brierty was cremated and her life will be celebrated by friends and family at a private ceremony.
