South West players go north
DANIEL Werthenbach, Jason Wilmot, Leon Karena, Michael Marshall and Brad Crisp are among 20 South West Country players heading to Bundaberg tomorrow to contest the 47th Battalion Trophy Carnival.
The team will play three 60-minute pool games against hosts Bundaberg (10am Saturday), South Burnett (4pm Saturday) and Gladstone (9am Sunday) with the top two teams to progress to the semi-finals.
Border Rugby League president Neil O'Connor said the players were pumped and ready to play.
"They're looking forward to going," O'Connor said.
"As far as the playing they are all pretty pumped and keen to get up there and impress.
"I'm sure they'll want to perform at that level."
Brad Crisp was originally selected as a shadow player but will get his chance in the team after another player broke his collarbone.
O'Connor said it would be tough for some of the players to step up to the level.
"There'll be a lot of quality up there. It's not just one step. It's a few steps up," he said.
"But it's like all sport. You've got to perform on the day."
O'Connor will travel to Bundaberg with the team on Friday.
He said it was important he gave his support to the players who would fight for a spot on the bus to the Charleville Outback Carnival in June.
"If they perform alright they'll (the team) stay the same but if not, there will be some changes," he said.
"They choose a Queensland Outback side from that carnival, which will play a curtain-raiser to a North Queensland Cowboys game.
"That pathway is a good pathway because it gives them the chance to be exposed to an NRL game.
"Hopefully some of those blokes from the South West Country team will be selected."
