Suicide bereavement hotline launched in Queensland

SOME of Australia's leading experts on suicide have come together to launch a new organisation supporting the Queenslanders bereaved by suicide.

Called Postvention Australia, the not-for-profit organisation is working to establish a network that provides holistic support, comfort and understanding for people left behind by loved ones.

Professor Diego de Leo, an internationally recognised expert on suicide, said many did not realise that the people left behind were sometimes at risk of suicide as well.

"In our view, there isn't enough support for individuals and families left behind," he said.

"We will work to prevent suicide by supporting our members to build a stronger suicide postvention sector.

"We will undertake public education and research.

"We will advocate for more awareness and understanding."

The Postvention Australia phone line is still being set up.

In the meantime anyone bereaved by suicide requiring information can phone the secretary, Alan Staines, on 0412 164 575.

The sad truth

  • It is estimated people who've been bereaved by suicide are six times greater risk of suicide than the general population
  • Seven people die by suicide every day in Australia
  • 178 people a day attempt suicide in Australia, half require hospitalisation
