Smoke haze ‘could last a few days yet’ according to BoM

RESIDENTS watched on last night as thick smoke billowed into Stanthorpe.

There's been no change this morning, with the Bureau of Meteorology suggesting the haze could linger over the Granite Belt for a couple days yet.

Lauren Patti from BoM said smoke from several fires in northern NSW had blown north, to cloud much of south-east Queensland.

"The closest to Stanthorpe are fires at Bangala Creek and Blue Gum Rd," Ms Patti said.

"Generally speaking, we had east to south-east winds push a lot of the smoke in NSW to south-east Queensland and north, north-east of the Southern Downs."

The Bangala Creek bushfire is located at Paddy's Flat, NSW, more than 60 kilometres east of Stanthorpe.

The out of control blaze has already torched more than 20,000 hectares in the Tenterfield local government area.

A little further north and the Blue Gum Rd bushfire has burnt through 1700 hectares in the Tooloom area.

North-east of Tooloom, and a 25,000 hectare fire in the Border Trail, Woodenbong area is being controlled.

"This smoke could hang around Stanthorpe for a number of days," Ms Patti said.

"All depends on how fireys go with containing those fires.

"It should ease a little during the day and enhance at night," she said.
