Show life is in the blood for Holders

WITH six generations of showies and four at this year's Stanthorpe Show - the Holder family and its descendants know show time better than anybody.

Family patriarch Max Holder has been coming to the show possibly longer than anybody else, yet never tires of it.

"Been coming for 70 years ... on and off,” Max said.

"I went to school out here at Dalcouth - had to get some sort of education. I was going to the show with my mother and father and been doing it ever since.

"It's our livelihood, our business. I poke about but don't do a lot of the hard work any more.”

Which I'm sure he can be forgiven for after so many years. It helps he has his daughter, grand kids and great grand kids to help out these days.

Unsurprisingly, the show landscape has changed a lot across Max's seven decades.

"A lot more big rides. They're all really popular. You have million dollar rides at the show's these days.

"It helps having family now.

"They have their disagreements but if you need help there's always somebody there to give you a hand.”

Max's daughter, Debbie Cronk, has been travelling with the show since she was born.

"Went to school in Brisbane but even then, dad was coming out to shows on the weekend.”

All the kids are kept plenty busy on the road. When they aren't helping at show days or setting up, they're doing school work just like any kid.

"We have teachers who travel around with us,” Debbie said.

"It's the sort of life you have to love or you wouldn't do it. We're just a little travelling community and everybody knows everybody.

"Stanthorpe's a bit of a reunion for everybody

too.”
