Shocking outburst: Man trashes home in violent rage

A SOUTHERN Downs man claimed a "bad mood" was to blame for a violent outburst in which he pummelled walls and furniture until he broke his own hand.

Police were called to a Stanthorpe address on September 23 where the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was living with his partner and her 11-year-old son.

The Stanthorpe Magistrates Court heard the house was a mess when officers arrived, with holes in several walls and furniture smashed to pieces.

Police prosecutor Ken Wiggan said the man's partner told police he "woke up in a bad mood" which quickly escalated to a "tantrum", with him punching the walls and breaking several items.

Sgt Wiggan said the man's 11-year-old stepson was hiding in another room during the violent outburst, which left the 28-year-old with a broken hand.

The court heard the man's partner was protected from the man under a domestic violence order at the time of the offending.

Duty lawyer Amber Acreman told the court her client battled severe mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and ADHD, with "amplified stress" triggering this particular episode.

Ms Acreman added the 28-year-old was now focused on working with mental health services and volunteering at community organisations such as Stanthorpe's Senior Citizens Association.

A letter from the man's partner was also submitted to the court, acknowledging his progress with mental health services and her ongoing support during his rehabilitation.

The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of contravening a domestic violence order.

He was fined $750.
