Thieves try to steal a shark in Hervey Bay robbery

OPTIMISTIC thieves attempted to steal a shark and fish from Hervey Bay's Reefworld Aquarium early on Monday morning.

The intruders used the pool net in an attempt to catch fish swimming in the outdoor tank and baits on a fishing line to hook the 45cm nervous shark.

Reefworld owner Greg Wolff believes the intruders climbed onto the roof to the outdoor tank, where the shark was kept.

"It's just annoying more than anything," he said.

"We're not too sure how many of the fish were taken because in a big school it's tough to notice if one or two are missing."

The intruders failed to catch the shark but left a hook and line in its mouth before leaving.

Mr Wolff has now installed outdoor sensors following the incident.

"Hopefully next time they'll be caught," he said.

"There's not much the police can do because with all the saltwater around there wouldn't be much for forensic testing."

In the 20 years Mr Wolff has worked there, about six break-ins have occurred.

On Saturday night, windows were also smashed at the Waterfront restaurant next to the aquarium.

Hervey Bay police are investigating.

Anyone with any information about these incidents is encouraged to phone their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
