Severe thunderstorm warning for SEQ

UPDATE: A collection of very dangerous thunderstorms bringing flash flooding, damaging winds up to 90kms strong and hail up to 3 centimetres thick have hit the Brisbane city fringe the Bureau of Meteorology has warned, with conditions across the area expected to worsen this afternoon.

The BoM warning puts large hailstones reported at Yamanto, with an easterly-moving storm cluster detected on the radar Somerset Dam, Lake Somerset and Lake Samsonvale matched by a severe cell forecast to affect Redcliffe, Caboolture and Wamuran by 2:05 pm and waters off Bribie Island, Beerburrum and northern Bribie Island by 2:35 pm when the next weather warning is due.

Other severe thunderstorms located near Greenbank and Wacol are forecast to affect Beenleigh, Camp Hill and Jandowae by 2:05 pm and Cleveland, Wynnum and southern waters of Moreton Bay by 2:35 pm.

11:58am A SEVERE thunderstorm warning bringing damaging wind gusts of over 90 kms and sizeable hail larger than 2 centimetres thick has been issued for Brisbane by the Bureau of Meteorology, with parts of the Gold and Sunshine coasts also affected.

Senior forecaster Jonty Hall said the wind and hail was the key concern for residents in the capital "for the next couple of hours" as a loose cluster of storms around the region continue to intensify.

But heavy rainfalls could hit the city later this afternoon if the severe storm cells consolidate, Mr Hall said.

"We're looking at a quite a potent set up for SEQ," Mr Hall told brisbanetimes.com.au earlier.

"There's pretty good risk of pretty dangerous storms around this afternoon."
