Serial burglar cries to see dad’s grave

A SERIAL burglar broke down in court on Friday over fears he would not get to see his father's grave for years.

Sitting in the dock of a Brisbane District Court room, Sunshine Coast man Steven Julious Mokany sobbed as he repeated over and over "I wouldn't mind visiting my father's grave" and "Give me another two years, two months and my mother might die".

Corrective Services officers and the accused's defence team struggled to calm the 43-year-old before Judge Helen Bowskill began taking submissions on the 16 break and enter, theft and wilful damage charges he pleaded guilty to.

The Crown revealed Mokany had recently spent 13 months behind bars because while he was on parole for a previous matter he was charged with a crime. As a result of that charge, the parole board returned him to prison to complete the 15 months left on a three-year sentence.

A magistrate dismissed that charge on Wednesday.

During that time Mokany's father died and he was not allowed to attend the funeral.

Judge Bowskill marked those 13 months as time served when sentencing Mokany to three years jail.

The remainder of the sentence was suspended for three years and convictions were recorded.

The court heard yesterday's charges stemmed from an October 2012 crime spree when items worth $30,000 were stolen from businesses in the Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions.

The court also heard the accused had 14 pages of criminal history in Queensland and NSW.

Judge Bowskill took into account Mokany's guilty pleas and his serious mental health and addiction problems.

"I can appreciate that in your case that (the 13 months in jail) would have been a very frustrating exercise to say the least," she said.

"The only thing I can say countering that, is inevitably with the sentence that I impose on you today, you would have been required to spend a period of time in custody.
