School teams build bionic hands and bridges

MINI-BRIDGE building skills helped Chinchilla State High School clinch the daily prize on the second day of the 2015 Darling Downs Science and Engineering Challenge.

Hundreds of students from far as Goondiwindi and Ipswich will visit the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba for the four-day event this week.

Another eight schools tested their skills in science, engineering and technology through a series of hands-on activities.

Chinchilla SHS won the day but faced tough competition from Laidley SHS, Our Lady of the Southern Cross College, St Saviour's College, Concordia Lutheran College, St Ursula's College, Ipswich Grammar School, and Darling Downs Christian School.

Year 10 student Isaac Forrest was part of the Chinchilla SHS team tasked with building a small bridge from balsa, pins, tape and paddle pop sticks.

"We had to really work as a team to get it done and there was good competition from other schools," Isaac said.

"All the Chinchilla teams worked really well and it was good that we won the day."

Students competed in a range of activities including constructing an earthquake-proof tower and building a "bionic hand" from PVC pipe, string, straws and timber coffee stirrers.

The challenge is aimed at inspiring students to study science and engineering at a senior level.

"Science is definitely something I've considered, but engineering is not exactly my thing," Isaac said.

"But today has really changed my mind about what it's all about - I might have a future in engineering."
